April Wurster, JD
April earned a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UCSD, a M.S. in Biology from UCSD and a J.D. from U.C. Hastings College of the Law. She began her career working at two large international law firms, Paul Hastings and Baker and McKenzie. At these law firms, she routinely worked on intellectual property protection and enforcement involving patents, trademarks, and copyright transactions. She also conducted interferences with the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, as well as investigations with the International Trade Commission. April is currently the director of IP at GenMark Diagnostics.
She prosecutes patents for software, hardware and life science technology and works regularly with R&D to identify commercially valuable IP. At GenMark, she identified a number of strategic opportunities to pursue new forms of IP not historically in GenMark’s portfolio. She conducts Examiner interviews resulting in the allowance of applications with broad claims and few arguments made on the record. She reduced outside legal fees by 15% by bringing foreign prosecution in-house while ensuring legal risks were minimized and business objectives maintained.
She prepares and negotiates Research Collaboration Agreements and Material Transfer Agreements and routinely performs Freedom to Operate analysis and provides written opinions.
